## History

### Why the car exists

By 2012 the next Enzo could not simply be a bigger Enzo. Porsche had shown the 918 Spyder and McLaren the P1, both hybrids. RM Sotheby's 2026 catalog puts it plainly: a new breed of hybrid-electric hypercars from other manufacturers was challenging Ferrari's status as the builder of the most extraordinary road cars. The answer was to put the Formula 1 department in charge of the chassis, hand-laminating a monocoque from four different types of carbon fiber and curing it in the race team's autoclaves, and to bolt an electric motor to the gearbox of the largest naturally aspirated V12 the company had built. Ferrari named it LaFerrari, the definitive Ferrari, and the 499-car run was sold before the March 5, 2013 Geneva unveiling.

### HY-KERS

The 6,262 cc V12 alone makes 789 hp (800 CV) and spins to 9,250 rpm; the electric motor adds 161 hp (120 kW, 163 CV), for a combined 950 hp (963 CV) and over 664 lb-ft (900 Nm) of torque. Unlike the 918 and the P1 there is no electric-only mode: HY-KERS fills in the torque curve below the V12's peak and recovers energy under braking, which is why Autoblog's first drive at Fiorano in June 2014 credited the electric motor with getting the car to 60 mph in 2.5 seconds or less. Ferrari's claims are 0-62 mph in under 3 seconds, 0-124 mph in under 7, 0-186 mph in 15, a top speed over 217 mph and a Fiorano lap under 1 minute 20 seconds, 5.2 seconds a lap faster than the Enzo. The Cars and Coffee detail is in the cabin: the seat is fixed to the tub in one of three sizes, and a lever at the front right of the seat squab slides the pedal box to the driver instead of the other way around.

### How a US customer got one

CNBC reported the car at $1.4 million and sold out in March 2013, and Autoblog's US first drive spelled out the requirement: a buyer had to be a serious collector who had bought at least five new Ferraris in the preceding few years. The car reached the United States as a 2014 and 2015 model year vehicle; the California Air Resources Board lists a 2014 LaFerrari Hybrid at 12 mpg city, 16 highway and 14 combined, and NHTSA's recall records cover US coupes built from May 15, 2014 to April 29, 2015. In 2020 the former chief executive of Ferrari North America, Maurizio Parlato, pleaded guilty in federal court to tax charges after receiving approximately $2.8 million in kickbacks from dealers and supercar purchasers between 2015 and 2017 for, in the Department of Justice's words, misallocating supercars to customers who were not on the list of approved purchasers.

### The 500th car and the Aperta

After the earthquakes in central Italy in 2016 Ferrari built one more coupe. RM Sotheby's sold it at Daytona International Speedway on December 3, 2016 for $7 million, with the money going to earthquake relief. Ten weeks earlier, at the Paris show, Ferrari had shown the Aperta for its 70th anniversary: 209 cars, 200 for customers and 9 kept by the factory as what it called celebrity cars for anniversary events, with a standard removable soft top or an optional removable carbon fiber hard top and the same 950 hp powertrain. All 200 customer cars were sold before the show opened. As of September 2026 the coupe trades around five times its list price and the Aperta around eight times.

## What to look for

Ferrari sold these to screened repeat customers, so a coupe that has changed hands more than twice in ten years is the exception and the chain of ownership is usually short and documented. The high-voltage battery is the first question. RM Sotheby's catalog records a $349,183.94 major service in May 2025 that included replacement of the battery on a 711-mile car, so on any LaFerrari the date of the last battery replacement, who did it and whether it was under Ferrari's coverage or paid by the owner is the number that separates two otherwise identical cars. Then the four NHTSA campaigns: 15V305000 for the L32 passenger and optional driver seat headrests, 15V306000 for the tire pressure monitoring software that showed the wrong warning after a puncture, 15V433000 for a driver's airbag module that could have been assembled in a rotated orientation, and 22V536000 for the brake fluid reservoir cap that could fail to vent. All four are dealer-performed and free, and a Ferrari dealer can confirm completion by VIN. The seat is fixed to the tub in one of three sizes and the pedal box moves to the driver, so a car ordered for a short original owner may not fit a tall second one, which is worth sitting in before flying to see it. On an Aperta, confirm both the soft top and, if ordered, the removable carbon fiber hard top are present, because the hard top was an option and the car is worth less without it. Miles are low across the fleet, so a car with 2,000 miles is not high mileage; a car with none has not been exercised, and the hybrid system and carbon-ceramic brakes both prefer use. US-specification cars, which RM Sotheby's puts at approximately 120 of the 499, carry federal lighting and emissions equipment and 2014 or 2015 model year titles, and an imported European car should have its federalization paperwork examined before any figure is discussed.

## Common problems

The published fault record is short and specific, which is what a ten-year-old car with a few hundred miles and a factory service program tends to produce. NHTSA lists four recall campaigns for US LaFerraris. Three date from mid-2015 and cover cars built from May 15, 2014 to April 29, 2015: the L32 seats fitted as standard on the passenger side and optional on the driver's side had headrests that did not absorb the required energy (15V305000, May 22, 2015); the tire pressure monitoring system showed a 50 mph warning after a puncture instead of telling the driver to stop (15V306000, May 26, 2015); and some driver's airbag modules were improperly assembled and could deploy in a rotated orientation (15V433000, July 7, 2015). The fourth came seven years later: a brake fluid reservoir cap that may not vent properly, creating a vacuum in the reservoir and a fluid leak that could lead to partial or total loss of brake function (22V536000, July 26, 2022), fixed with a new cap and a software update that adds a low brake fluid warning. The ownership cost no other Ferrari of the period carries is the hybrid battery. The lowest recorded LaFerrari sale on classic.com is $715,000 for a 2011 Prototype M4 on August 20, 2022, which is a development mule and not a comparable for a customer car. At the top, classic.com records a 2017 Aperta sold by Mecum on January 17, 2026 for $11,000,000 and two 2026 coupe results: a 2014 car sold by Mecum on May 16, 2026 for $8,580,000 and a 2015 car sold by RM Sotheby's at Monterey on August 15, 2026 for $8,695,000. The Monterey car is the one lot page fetched for this research: chassis ZFF76ZFAXE0206839, Rosso Corsa over Nero, delivered new through Ferrari of Denver in February 2015, showing 711 miles at cataloguing, with a May 2025 major service by the delivering dealer that included a new high-voltage battery at $349,183.94. That puts the best coupes at roughly six times their list price after twelve years. The Aperta has moved further: classic.com's benchmark is $8,517,733 and a 2017 car sold at Mecum in January 2026 for $11,000,000, above the $10,043,000 that the 210th charity car brought in Maranello in 2017. The two charity results, $7 million for the 500th coupe in December 2016 and 8.3 million euros for the 210th Aperta, were record prices for a new car at the time and marked the ceiling early; the market has since caught up to them with ordinary customer cars. The prototypes sit far below, from $715,000 to $825,000, and should not be read into the customer-car curve. What moves an individual car within this range, on the evidence of the lot page fetched, is miles in the hundreds, an original US delivery, the color, and a documented battery replacement, since a buyer who knows the $349,183.94 figure will price it in whether or not the seller has paid it.
