- Production total: 164,874
- Production notes: Porsche's Christophorus magazine, in its 25th anniversary feature, states that a total of 164,874 first-generation Boxsters were built. Renndriver repeats the figure and credits it to the same Porsche retrospective, so it is one source restated rather than two independent counts. No source consulted disagrees with it, and no year-by-year or US-only production figure was found in any fetched source; the share of the 164,874 sold in the United States is not published anywhere checked. Production began at the former 928 facility in Stuttgart in 1996 and, from September 1997 with 1998 model year cars, also at Valmet Automotive in Uusikaupunki, Finland (Stuttcars, Wikipedia). The 11th character of the VIN tells them apart: S for Stuttgart, U for Uusikaupunki. The Boxster S split is not published in any fetched source. The 2004 550 Spyder anniversary edition was limited to 1,953 cars, a figure stated by Porsche, Stuttcars, Wikipedia and PCARMARKET, of which 500 were built for the US market (Stuttcars, Wikipedia, PCARMARKET). US prices: the 1997 Boxster listed at $39,980 per cars.com's archived specifications, and MotorWeek gives the 2000 Boxster S a base price of $50,695, with its test car at $53,527; each figure rests on that single source. Automobile Magazine, quoted by MotorWeek, estimated the S at $49,000 before launch. No documented US list price was found for the 2000-2004 base Boxster or the 2004 550 Spyder anniversary edition.

## Summary
The 986 Boxster is the car that got Porsche out of trouble in the 1990s and the cheapest way into a mid-engine Porsche today. Shown as a concept at Detroit in January 1993 and built from August 1996, it reached the United States for the 1997 model year with a 201 hp 2.5-liter water-cooled flat-six mounted ahead of the rear axle, a five-speed manual or Tiptronic, a power top and a $39,980 list price. It shared its nose, doors and much of its engine design with the coming 996 911, which is how Porsche made the numbers work. For 2000 the base engine grew to 2.7 liters and the 250 hp Boxster S arrived with a six-speed, 996 brakes and a $50,695 sticker; for 2003 both gained power and a heated glass rear window. The run ended with the 2004 550 Spyder anniversary edition, 1,953 built and 500 for the US. Porsche built 164,874 in all. The M96 engine's intermediate shaft bearing, rear main seal and cylinder faults are why classic.com puts the average 986 sale at $15,580 as of September 2026.

## Notable variants
- 1997-1999 Boxster (2.5): The original: 201 hp, five-speed manual or five-speed Tiptronic S, cable throttle, $39,980 new in 1997. Early engines had casting problems, cracked or slipped liners and porous blocks, which Wikipedia says were resolved in late 1999. Arctic Silver with Boxster Red interior was the launch color scheme.
- 2000-2002 Boxster (2.7): 2.7 liters and 217 hp with electronic throttle, which made Porsche Stability Management possible as an option from 2001. Still the five-speed manual. Renndriver places the 2000-2001 cars in the mixed transition between intermediate shaft bearing designs.
- 2000-2002 Boxster S (3.2): 250 hp, a Getrag six-speed manual, the 996's cross-drilled brakes behind red calipers, a third center radiator and twin tailpipes. $50,695 new. MotorWeek ran it to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds and stopped it from 60 in 99 feet.
- 2003-2004 Boxster and Boxster S (986.2): Heated glass rear window replacing the plastic one, the first glovebox, clear turn signals, revised bumpers and more power (258 hp for the S). Stuttcars calls the glass window a single reason to prefer these cars; renndriver notes the revised cars entered production in calendar 2002.
- 2004 Boxster S 550 Spyder anniversary edition: 1,953 built, 500 for the US, all GT Silver Metallic with Cocoa leather standard (dark gray natural leather a no-cost option), about 264 hp, M030 sport suspension, 0.2 in (5 mm) wheel spacers and a numbered plaque. US cars alone got red rear turn signal lenses. NHTSA lists it as the Boxster 50 Jahre Spyder 550.
- Tiptronic S cars (all years): ZF-based five-speed automatic with steering wheel buttons, offered from the start on every 986. It shifts the weight balance to 45/55 from 47/53 with the manual. classic.com's benchmarks put automatic cars below manual cars in both base and S form as of September 2026.

## History

### A cheaper Porsche, or no Porsche

By the early 1990s Porsche was in serious trouble. Its own newsroom names the causes: falling sales, partly from the weak US dollar, and the cost of building four technically unrelated lines, the 911, 944, 968 and 928. It became a takeover target. A new board formed in 1991, with Horst Marchart running development and Wendelin Wiedeking running production, set out to cut the production cost of new cars by 30 percent through carry-over parts. The roadster and the next 911 were developed by shared teams, so the first Boxster took its front end, doors and many other components from the 996 that followed a year later. Grant Larson, an American designer working under Harm Lagaay, drew the concept from the 550 Spyder and the 718 RS 60, down to the central tailpipe he still names as a favorite detail. Shown at Detroit in January 1993, it drew such a response that Marchart ordered design work stopped and the car built as shown.

### 1997-1999: the 2.5 arrives

Series production began in August 1996, and the first cars reached the United States as 1997 models. MotorWeek's 25th anniversary piece drove the first one to land here, originally owned by Jerry Seinfeld. The M96 flat-six made 201 hp from 2.5 liters, water-cooled and mounted ahead of the rear axle, with a five-speed manual shifted by cables rather than rods or a ZF-based five-speed Tiptronic S. Porsche's first monoblock brake calipers, developed with Brembo, were standard. Consumer Guide's manual test car ran 7.5 seconds to 60 mph against Porsche's 6.7-second claim and averaged 21.7 mpg; it praised the steering and complained about the ride, the plastic rear window and the lack of a glovebox. Demand outran Stuttgart, and Valmet Automotive in Uusikaupunki, Finland, began building Boxsters in September 1997 for 1998.

### 2000-2002: 2.7 liters and the Boxster S

For 2000 the base engine grew to 2.7 liters and 217 hp on the 996 crankshaft, with electronic throttle that allowed Porsche Stability Management as an option from 2001. The Boxster S used a 3.2-liter version with 250 hp and 225 lb-ft, a Getrag six-speed, the 996's cross-drilled brakes behind red calipers, stiffer springs and a third radiator behind a center intake. MotorWeek tested one at $50,695 base and recorded 5.5 seconds to 60 mph, 13.9 seconds at 102 mph in the quarter and a 99-foot stop from 60; its only wishes were a better stereo and a heated rear window. US cars gained an interior trunk release, rear from September 2001 and front from January 2002.

### 2003-2004: glass, a glovebox and 550 Spyder silver

The 986 never got a true facelift. For the 2003 model year the base engine rose to 228 hp by Consumer Guide's figure and the S to 258 hp, the top gained a heated glass rear window, the cabin finally got a glovebox, and clear turn signals replaced the amber ones, though US cars kept amber front side markers. Porsche showed the Boxster S anniversary edition, 50 Years of 550 Spyder, at Detroit in January 2004: 1,953 cars, 500 for the US, all GT Silver Metallic, the Carrera GT's color, with Cocoa leather, sport suspension and about 264 hp. US cars alone had red rear turn signals. The 987 replaced the 986 for 2005, after 164,874 had been built.

## What to look for

The record matters more than the model year. Renndriver's inspection order is paperwork, cold start, engine bay, underside on a lift, roof and drains, then a road test. On paperwork, the first question is what has been done about the intermediate shaft bearing: every 986 uses the M96, the bearing design changed during the run, 2000 and 2001 cars can have either design, and only a specialist can identify what is fitted. A retrofit invoice should name the kit and usually sits beside a clutch, rear main seal, air-oil separator and water pump from the same visit, since LN Engineering says those are commonly done together; it adds that 1997-2002 five-chain engines may also need VarioCam wear pads. A cut-open oil filter checked for ferrous debris is one of the few ways to look for early bearing wear without opening the engine. On a lift, fresh oil low on the bellhousing points at the rear main seal; a borescope settles bore scoring when smoke, noise or oil use raise the question. The coolant expansion tank in the rear trunk and the radiators behind the low front openings collect leaves and grime. The top should cycle cleanly with the clamshell aligned; 1997-2002 cars have a plastic rear window and 2003-2004 cars heated glass. Blocked drains leave damp carpet. VIN character 11 is S for a Stuttgart car and U for a Finnish one. Two recalls apply: a Tiptronic key-lock cable adjustment and missing headlight adjuster caps on 2001-2004 cars; the NHTSA lookup confirms both were done. A 550 edition should carry its numbered plaque, GT Silver paint and red US rear lenses. No fetched source lists the factory paint codes; Stuttcars names Arctic Silver as the launch color and Atlas Gray as a 2004 addition.

## Common problems

The intermediate shaft bearing is the fault that defines the M96 engine in every 986. The shaft helps drive the camshaft chains and runs on a bearing pressed into the case; when it fails it can take the engine with it. Renndriver notes that no independently verified, year-by-year failure rate exists for the 986, and that the bearing design changed during the run. Prevention is a retrofit with the engine in the car. LN Engineering, a US vendor, prices its ceramic IMS Retrofit kit below $1,000 and its oil-fed IMS Solution under $2,000, plus 10 to 14 hours of labor that adds $500 to $3,000 or more, and 3 to 4 hours more to drop the sump and borescope the cylinders first; these are one vendor's figures. Early engines had casting problems: cracked or slipped cylinder liners, which Wikipedia says were resolved in late 1999, and porous blocks that let coolant and oil mix, which Porsche repaired by boring out and resleeving cylinders. Stuttcars says most of those failures happened under warranty. Bore scoring and the rear main seal leak are the other engine-out jobs. Consumer Guide's trouble spots for early cars include a steel cylinder head plug that leaked oil (1997), a leaking oil filler hose causing a check-engine light and rough running (1997-2000), water in the air-cleaner housing causing a miss (1997) and a squealing power-steering belt on manual cars (1997-1998). Cooling system parts, the soft top and its drains age with time as much as miles. No fetched US source prices a bore-scoring repair or a full restoration.

## Market notes

All figures are US dollars, as of September 2026. classic.com gives the 986 an average sale price of $15,580 across model years 1997-2004, with its lowest recorded sale $2,250 for a 2000 car on September 28, 2024. Its benchmarks by configuration: base Boxster with the manual $13,555 and with the automatic $11,851; Boxster S manual $16,902 and automatic $13,395; 550 Spyder anniversary edition manual $23,523 and automatic $18,847. The manual premium runs about $1,700 on a base car and $3,500 on an S. classic.com also shows asking prices for cars currently for sale, which are not results and are not used here. The one individual result fetched directly is PCARMARKET's sale of a 6,563-mile 2004 550 anniversary edition in GT Silver with dark gray leather, one of the 500 US cars, from its original owner's collection in Pennsylvania, at $38,000; the listing prints no sale date. Stuttcars' undated buyer's guide, read in September 2026, puts base cars at $6,000 to $14,000 and the S at $10,000 to $20,000, with a manual S averaging around $17,500 and exceptional cars reaching $40,500 at auction; it names no sales behind those ranges. Bring a Trailer results could not be retrieved and are not cited. No auction-house lot for a standard 986 was fetched.

## Value trajectory

The 986 has spent most of two decades as an inexpensive way into a water-cooled Porsche, and as of September 2026 classic.com's $15,580 average says it still is. The car that listed at $39,980 in 1997 now benchmarks at $13,555 as a base manual, and the Boxster S that cost $50,695 in 2000 benchmarks at $16,902 as a manual, about a third of its list price. The floor is lower still: classic.com's lowest recorded sale is $2,250, for a 2000 car in September 2024. The gaps that matter are transmission and trim rather than year: manual over automatic, S over base, and the 550 Spyder anniversary edition over both at $23,523 for a manual. The one directly fetched 550 result, $38,000 for a 6,563-mile US car on PCARMARKET, shows what a low-mile special edition can bring against that benchmark. Stuttcars' undated guide calls the 986 a modern classic whose values are rising but cites no sales to show it. Intermediate shaft paperwork, the roof and mileage explain more of the spread than the model year. None of this is a forecast.
